Hi Cuties!!💕
Welcome back to my blog!!
I'm so thankful you're here! I hope you've been doing well!
Today I wanted to do a little story time! I am going to talk about the time I worked with a Jfashion brand to come up with "fan made" designs!!
I hope you enjoy!
(Hint: Click the brand name ↓ to visit their website or scroll to the bottom of page for brand summary)
Around February of this year, I followed a brand called "Majoretty" on Insta, because I saw they sell affordable Jfashion items at the chain clothing store, Avail. About a month after I followed them, they made a post saying they wanted to host a "fan meeting," and the selected fans could help with feedback on the new items. Of course I wanted to go! Working in fashion is a dream, and how awesome would it be to meet the designers and get a peek behind the scenes. I sent my very eager, nearly pleading, message. And then I waited... and waited... and... then... my ADHD kicked in and I totally forgot I sent a message at all. Until I saw I had a notification. A message that said they look forward to meeting me, hearing my ideas, and working together. I was SO EXCITED!! Genuinely my hands were shaking like crazy, and I was pacing around my house! I called my husband, and we had to adjust our work schedules, and find a pet sitter! And just like that, I had it in my schedule.
I felt like maybe they saw something in my message, or on my profile, that made them choose me, but I also had to keep in mind that other fashion babes were getting selected too. I didn't know how many there would be... 10, 20? 100? 200?! That's when I started to get a little worried, as I am not good in large groups of people. If 20-year-old me was in this situation, she would have bailed. But I am so glad current me didn't. Because when the time came, I gathered all my designs and notes, traveled 8 hours to Tokyo, got dressed in my cutest outfit, and made it to the building. In that moment, I started to realize that 1) I ain't a quitter! and 2) I am doing something I have dreamed of since I was a little girl. No matter if there ARE 200, 400, even 1000 people behind this elevator door, I am DOING THIS!! (okay maybe not 1000, that's like, wayyyy too many people for an office building!) I don't know if it was my pure drive and passion for fashion, or my husband holding my hand the whole way there, but when I walked in, I suddenly felt at peace.
As we stepped out of the elevator, it was quiet... so quiet, in fact, I thought we were in the wrong building! Until I saw the sign for "Majoretty fan meeting". No one else was around... I arrived early, for sure, but earlier than everyone else? That would be SOOO embarrassing for me! When I stepped into the studio area, I met the designers and coordinators and did 挨拶 (aisatsu - Formal Japanese introductions. VERY IMPORTANT!!) - who were all very welcoming and kind! I was guided to the area they prepared, and looked around to see a cute table set up, with a seat for all the executives, designers, and 4 guests. I realized right then that out of all the applicants, only 4 were selected. And I was one of them!! ME! What an amazing opportunity!
I don't think I'm allowed to go into detail, but after several hours of sharing designs, ideas, and thoughts on materials, they told us they would get back to us if/when the new designs were ready. Over a month went by and I had to go back to the states to see my family for the first time in YEARS!! While I was there, I didn't have good cell signal and no Wi-Fi at all! WHAT A NIGHTMARE! Because of that, I couldn't receive any messages. So, I sort of unplugged from the internet and just enjoyed time with family! It was very nice!! One night I stayed over at my best friend's house for a game night and finally had Wi-Fi. I woke up that next morning to see that my feedback was accepted, and my inspired design was in production!! I was beyond excited; I immediately called my parents. Even though they don't really understand the fashion, they're always so supportive of me! I also, of course, called my husband, who stayed in Japan while I went back for my visit. It was a day I will always remember. My parents started calling me their little fashion designer, like they did when I'd draw clothes as a child. I must admit, even in my late 20s, when they told me they were proud of me, I felt like their little girl again.
Unfortunately, I did miss the release date, because my stay in America was 2 months long, and it all sold out pretty quickly. Luckily, I was sent mine for free via mail, and I was able to do SNS promo! I would have loved to see the pictures of me and my username on the promo art in person, to take a moment and really think about where I am in life and just be excited about what I'm doing next. But, I plan to keep going and to keep talking about fashion and wearing fashion and designing fashion concept art. One day, I WILL see my face on promo posters all around Japan, and maybe one day, the world! I want it more than anything. I've already come this far; the only option is to keep going!!
Wish me luck!!
